5 Things to Know About Post-DUI Car Insurance

|

If you have been convicted of a DUI in the Savannah area, there are some important things you should know about your car insurance.

  1. Your insurance company is going to find out and will likely drop your coverage. You are now considered high-risk to insure which means you will need to apply to a "nonstandard" insurance company which you may pay at least three times more for.
  2. You can always apply to the Western Association of Automobile Insurance Plans for insurance. This company forces local companies to underwrite a certain quota of high risk drivers.
  3. Your insurance provider will also look at factors surrounding your DUI. A DUI in which you were speeding or injured another person will lead to more severe penalties.
  4. Unfortunately, a DUI offense will remain on your DMV record forever. However, it typically only affects auto insurance quotes for five to seven years. Your rates should return to normal after seven years assuming you have had no additional driving infractions or accidents in that time.
  5. Most times, you will have to file an SR-22 for a DUI conviction which is a statement of financial responsibility and serves as proof that you have the proper amount of insurance required of you. Your insurance company may file for an SR-22 for you but you should check with your company for how they operate.
